Headline
Real GDP by industry rose +0.5% in April 2026, its largest monthly expansion since July 2025, rebounding from a −0.1% contraction in March. Growth was broad-based: 14 of 20 industrial sectors expanded, with both goods and services contributing. [StatCan, The Daily, 2026-06-30]
Drivers
- Goods-producing industries +1.2%, led by mining, quarrying, and oil & gas +2.9% (largest since Feb 2024). Oil & gas extraction rose 3.7% on an oil-sands rebound (+6.6%) as synthetic crude output recovered from extended maintenance.
- Services-producing industries +0.3% (third straight monthly gain), driven by the public sector (+0.4%) — public administration +0.7% across all levels of government — and transportation & warehousing +0.9% (rail +3.8%, pipelines +2.6%).
- Manufacturing +0.6% and construction +0.7% — construction’s first rise in five months, led by residential building +1.3%. Durable-goods manufacturing +1.1% (machinery +3.0%). Finance & insurance +0.4% and real estate +0.2% added support.
- Drags: mining & quarrying ex-oil & gas −0.1% (metal ore mining −2.2%) and chemical manufacturing −6.8% partially offset the gains.
Advance estimate — May 2026
StatCan’s advance estimate indicates real GDP +0.1% in May, with gains in finance & insurance and real estate partly offset by declines in wholesale trade and agriculture. Preliminary; official May data (with a June advance estimate) release July 31, 2026.
Read-through for the Bank of Canada
A firm +0.5% print plus a positive May advance estimate signals the economy carried momentum into Q2, reducing the urgency for near-term easing and supporting a hold at the current 2.25% overnight rate. Softness in trade-exposed sectors (chemicals, metal ore) keeps tariff risk in view.
Consensus expectations were not published in the official StatCan release and are therefore not cited here. All figures seasonally adjusted, chained (2017) dollars, StatCan Table 36-10-0434-01. Monthly data point logged to Canada_GDP_Workbook_June-6-1-1 (1).xlsx → Monthly_GDP_Industry tab.
